Microsoft 365 Premium Unveiled: AI-Powered Office Suite at $19.99, Matching ChatGPT Plus Price
Microsoft has introduced a new Microsoft 365 Premium subscription that bundles its full suite of Office apps with advanced AI capabilities at the same price as OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus—$19.99 per month. This move marks a significant evolution in Microsoft’s strategy to integrate AI deeply into productivity tools. The new subscription combines the trusted Microsoft 365 experience with the most powerful version of Copilot, offering users the highest usage limits for features like GPT-4o image and voice generation, Copilot Podcasts, Deep Research, Vision, and Actions. It also includes all benefits of the Microsoft 365 Family plan: access to Office desktop apps for up to six people, 1TB of OneDrive storage per user, and more. Gareth Oystryk, senior director of marketing for Copilot Pro and Microsoft 365, described the new plan as the most powerful AI and productivity offering for individuals, targeting solopreneurs, professionals, and high achievers tackling demanding workloads. He emphasized the unmatched value, especially when compared to competitors. A key differentiator is the seamless integration of Copilot directly into Office apps like Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Outlook across Windows, Mac, iPad, and other platforms. This integration allows users to leverage AI for drafting, analyzing, summarizing, and visualizing content within familiar tools. Perhaps the most notable feature is the ability for personal Microsoft 365 Premium, Family, or Personal subscribers to bring Copilot to their workplace. By signing into their work Office apps with their personal Microsoft account, users can unlock Copilot features even in corporate environments—without compromising security or compliance. The setup ensures corporate data remains protected and does not transfer to personal accounts. IT administrators retain control and can enable or disable this functionality as needed. However, currently, only the main account holder of a Family or Premium subscription can use this feature, though Microsoft acknowledges customer feedback and is evaluating options for sharing. Existing Personal and Family subscribers will also gain access to enhanced GPT-4o capabilities and higher usage limits, while Copilot Chat—previously limited to commercial customers—will now be available across all consumer plans. With these updates, Microsoft is effectively phasing out Copilot Pro, which was originally designed for power users seeking priority access to advanced AI models. While Copilot Pro will no longer be sold, existing subscribers won’t be automatically upgraded to Microsoft 365 Premium. Microsoft has not yet announced a timeline for discontinuing the plan. The launch of Microsoft 365 Premium reflects Microsoft’s broader vision: to embed AI into the core of productivity, making it accessible, powerful, and deeply integrated—while maintaining enterprise-grade security and flexibility.
