Coursera Integrates with ChatGPT as First Learning Platform in OpenAI’s New App Ecosystem, Enabling Instant Access to World-Class Education
Coursera has announced a groundbreaking partnership with OpenAI, making it one of the first official apps integrated into ChatGPT, unveiled during OpenAI’s DevDay. This collaboration marks the first time an online learning platform has been directly embedded within ChatGPT, bringing trusted, high-quality educational content to hundreds of millions of users worldwide. Every week, over 800 million people use ChatGPT, with learning being one of the most frequent activities. Now, users can access relevant Coursera videos, course materials, and information directly within their conversations. The integration transforms casual chats into interactive learning moments, allowing users to explore topics in depth with authoritative content. Users can simply ask ChatGPT to access the Coursera app, or the AI will suggest Coursera resources when it detects a learning opportunity in the conversation. “This partnership reflects Coursera and OpenAI’s shared mission to expand access to education and empower people to learn, grow, and thrive,” said Greg Hart, CEO of Coursera. “By placing verified, world-class learning into the hands of millions, we’re helping individuals gain the skills they need to seize economic opportunities and prepare for the future of work.” Leah Belsky, VP of Education at OpenAI, emphasized the synergy between human expertise and AI: “ChatGPT is already a go-to tool for people eager to learn. But the most impactful learning happens when AI and human insight work together. By bringing Coursera’s world-class educators and institutions into ChatGPT, we’re making it easier for learners to find trusted content, build job-ready skills, advance their careers, and unlock new possibilities.” Built using OpenAI’s Apps SDK, the Coursera app represents a major leap in making high-quality education more discoverable and scalable. It enables learners to move from curiosity to credentials faster and with greater confidence, bridging the gap between interest and achievement. Coursera is the first online learning platform—and among the earliest partners overall—to join OpenAI’s new generation of apps in ChatGPT. The two companies plan to continue exploring how generative AI can make learning more personalized, engaging, and accessible. The Coursera app is now available to all logged-in ChatGPT users outside the European Union, including those on Free, Go, Plus, and Pro plans. Initially launched in English, the app includes video subtitles and dubbing in select languages. Users can explore the app by visiting the Apps in ChatGPT blog or trying it directly within ChatGPT. Founded in 2012 by Andrew Ng and Daphne Koller, Coursera has grown into one of the world’s largest online learning platforms, with 183 million registered learners as of June 30, 2025. It partners with over 350 leading universities and industry leaders to offer courses, Specializations, Professional Certificates, and degree programs. Through innovative tools like AI-powered Coach, Role Play, and Course Builder, and solutions such as Skills Tracks, Coursera helps institutions and individuals upskill in high-demand fields like generative AI, data science, technology, and business. As a Delaware public benefit corporation and B Corp, Coursera remains committed to delivering equitable, scalable, and impactful learning experiences globally.
