OpenAI invited 70 students from over 50 universities—including Stanford, the University of Pennsylvania, Ohio State, UCLA, BYU, and Washington University in St. Louis—to participate in a virtual lab where they collaborated on developing, testing, and voting for the most effective and practical prompts. The prompts are grouped into three main categories: study, career, and life. They range from simple requests like finding synonyms for “sophisticated” to more complex, introspective queries such as asking ChatGPT to help deduce one’s “true goals in life.” Some are highly practical, like asking the AI to “pre-game the dining hall menu” and generate a healthy, high-protein meal plan with fruits and vegetables for the week. Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, shared on X that the students spent weeks refining their interactions with the AI, testing different approaches and evaluating which prompts delivered the most useful results. “Together they tested, refined, and voted on the most useful chats, and today we're sharing their top 100 for students everywhere,” he wrote. Among the standout study prompts are requests to summarize dense academic texts, break down complex concepts into simpler terms, and create flashcards for exam prep. Career-focused prompts include asking for help writing cover letters, preparing for job interviews, and even simulating a mock salary negotiation. Life prompts cover everything from managing time and stress to getting advice on choosing a major or navigating roommate conflicts. The initiative aligns with OpenAI CEO Sam Altman’s vision of building an AI with Ph.D.-level expertise—capable of offering deep, reliable insights across a wide range of topics. However, the growing role of AI in education has sparked debate. While some students see it as a valuable study aid, others worry about overreliance or ethical concerns. Educators are responding in varied ways. Some institutions have banned AI use in classrooms, while others are shifting toward in-person exams, handwritten assignments, and custom tools designed to detect AI-generated content.
