Nvidia Surges to 94% GPU Market Share Amid 27% Shipment Spike Driven by Tariff Fears and High Demand
Total GPU shipments for the second quarter of 2025 reached 11.6 million units, according to a report from Jon Peddie Research, marking a 27% increase from the previous quarter. This surge stands in contrast to the typical seasonal decline seen in past years. Desktop PC CPU shipments also rose, reaching 21.7 million units—up 21.6% from the prior quarter. Jon Peddie Research president Dr. Jon Peddie noted the unusual market dynamics: “AIB prices dropped for midrange and entry-level models, while high-end AIB prices increased, and most retail suppliers ran out of stock. This is very unusual for the second quarter.” He attributed the shift to anticipated price hikes due to tariffs, prompting buyers to stock up ahead of potential cost increases. In terms of market share, Nvidia maintained its dominant position with 94% of GPU shipments, a 2.1 percentage point increase from the previous quarter. AMD followed in second place with 6%, a notable improvement compared to Intel, whose share was so minimal it did not register on the chart. Nvidia’s continued leadership underscores its stronghold in the AI and high-performance computing markets, where demand for advanced GPUs remains strong. The data highlights a growing trend of accelerated purchasing behavior, driven by supply chain concerns and rising costs. As AI adoption expands across industries, demand for powerful graphics processing units continues to outpace traditional seasonal patterns.
