EU Launches Third Phase of Destination Earth Digital Twin to Enhance AI-Powered Climate and Weather Predictions

The European Commission and the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) have signed an agreement to launch the third implementation phase of Destination Earth (DestinE), a flagship initiative aimed at creating a highly accurate digital twin of the planet. The new phase will begin in June 2026 and run until June 2028. This stage will focus on enhancing the digital twin’s capabilities to deliver more precise and timely climate and weather predictions, leveraging advanced modeling, real-time data integration, and artificial intelligence. The project seeks to support policymakers, scientists, and emergency responders by providing actionable insights into climate change impacts, extreme weather events, and long-term environmental trends. By combining high-resolution Earth observation data with cutting-edge computational models, DestinE aims to become a central tool for climate resilience and sustainable decision-making across Europe and beyond.
