Google Photos Launches AI-Powered "Me Meme" Feature for Fun Self-Generated Memes
Google Photos has introduced a new experimental feature called “Me Meme,” allowing users to turn their own photos into personalized memes using generative AI. The feature, which is currently rolling out to U.S.-based users, lets you combine a photo of yourself with a meme template to create custom, AI-generated images. First spotted in development last October by Android Authority, the feature was officially announced by Google on Thursday via its Photos Community site. It’s powered by Google’s Gemini AI technology, specifically the Nano Banana model, which also underpins other AI tools in the app, such as the ability to transform photos into artwork, cartoons, or paintings. Google notes that “Me Meme” is still in the experimental phase, so results may not always perfectly match the original photo. For best outcomes, the company recommends using well-lit, clear, front-facing images. The feature is designed to be a playful way to engage with AI tools and explore the creative potential of your photo library. Though not a core productivity tool, features like this help keep users coming back to Google Photos, especially as competition grows in the AI-powered photo and content creation space. The popularity of self-focused AI experiences—like OpenAI’s Sora app, which allows users to generate videos featuring themselves—shows strong user interest in personalized AI content. “Me Meme” is not yet available to all users. When it launches, it will appear under the “Create” tab in the Google Photos app. Google says the feature will roll out to U.S. users on both iOS and Android over the coming weeks. To use it, select a meme template—either from the app’s library or upload your own—then tap “add photo” and “Generate.” Once the AI creates the meme, you can save it, share it on social media, or tap “regenerate” to try a different version. Google also plans to add more templates over time, expanding the creative possibilities.
