Meta Tests Standalone Vibes App for AI-Generated Short Videos as It Expands AI Feature Subscriptions
Meta is testing a standalone app for its AI-generated video feature, Vibes, the company confirmed to TechCrunch on Thursday. Launched in September, Vibes allows users to create and share short-form AI-generated videos, with a dedicated feed showcasing AI-made content from others. The experience resembles TikTok or Instagram Reels, but every video in the feed is generated by artificial intelligence. Until now, Vibes has been accessible only within the Meta AI app. By launching a standalone version, Meta aims to position the feature as a more direct competitor to Sora, OpenAI’s recently launched AI video generation and social platform. “Following the strong early traction of Vibes within Meta AI, we are testing a standalone app to build on that momentum,” Meta said in an emailed statement. “We’ve seen that users are increasingly leaning into the format to create, discover, and share AI-generated video with friends. This standalone app provides a dedicated home for that experience, offering people a more focused and immersive environment. We will look to expand the app further based on what we learn from the community.” The news was first reported by Platformer. While Meta hasn’t shared specific usage numbers, the company said Vibes has performed well, with steady growth in Meta AI usage since its launch—indicating strong user interest in AI video creation. The standalone app is designed to offer a more streamlined experience focused solely on content creation and discovery. With Vibes, users can generate videos from scratch or remix existing ones from the feed. Before posting, they can enhance videos with new visuals, add music, and adjust stylistic elements. Once ready, videos can be shared directly to the Vibes feed, sent via direct message, or cross-posted to Instagram Stories, Reels, and Facebook. Meta noted that collaboration and sharing are on the rise, with many Vibes videos being sent to friends—mirroring how users currently engage with Reels. The company sees this as a sign of growing social utility in AI-generated content. Additionally, Meta revealed it is exploring premium subscription models for AI features, including Vibes. Although the feature has been free since launch, Meta plans to introduce freemium access in the coming months. Subscribers would unlock additional video creation tools and monthly credits for generating more advanced or longer AI videos. These test subscriptions will roll out soon, as part of broader efforts to monetize AI capabilities across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
