Meta Launches AI-Generated Video Feed Vibes in Europe Amid Backlash Over 'AI Slop'

Meta has launched Vibes, its short-form video feed powered entirely by AI-generated content, across Europe through the Meta AI app. The feature, which debuted in the U.S. six weeks prior, functions similarly to TikTok or Instagram Reels, but every video in the feed is created using artificial intelligence. Vibes allows users to generate and share short videos using text prompts or by remixing existing AI videos. Creators can add new visuals, apply different styles, and layer in music to tailor their content. The platform is designed to be social and collaborative, encouraging users to co-create, remix, and build stories together. Videos can be shared directly to the Vibes feed, sent to friends, or cross-posted to Instagram and Facebook Stories and Reels. Meta says the feed will become increasingly personalized over time, adapting to users’ interests based on their interactions. The company emphasizes that Vibes is meant to be a creative playground where users experiment with AI tools to express themselves. The launch comes amid growing competition in the AI content space. Just days after Meta introduced Vibes in the U.S., OpenAI unveiled Sora, a platform enabling users to generate and share AI videos. This rapid push into AI-generated video content highlights the race among tech giants to dominate the next wave of digital creativity. However, the rollout has drawn mixed reactions. When Meta first announced Vibes in September, user comments on Mark Zuckerberg’s post were largely critical. Many expressed skepticism, with popular replies including “gang nobody wants this,” “Bro’s posting ai slop on his own app,” and “What…?” The term “ai slop” has become a common critique for low-quality, formulaic AI content flooding social media. This move is particularly notable given Meta’s earlier public stance. In early 2024, the company urged creators to focus on “authentic storytelling” and warned against short-form content that lacks originality or value. Now, with Vibes, Meta is betting big on AI-generated entertainment, even as it grapples with concerns about content quality and user engagement. Despite the criticism, Meta reports that media generation within the Meta AI app has increased more than tenfold since its launch, suggesting strong initial user interest. The European rollout marks a key expansion of the company’s AI-first strategy, as it seeks to stay ahead in the fast-evolving landscape of generative AI and social media.
