Beijing West AI Valley Unveiled: Renmin University and Mentougou District Collaborate to Boost AI Innovation
On May 18, the Artificial Intelligence Autonomous Innovation Development Forum was held, marking a significant milestone in the collaboration between academia and industry. The event saw the unveiling of the "Jingxi Wisdom Valley Renmin University of China AI and Smart Governance Research Center." Renmin University of China's President, Lin Shangli, and Qü Chénfēi, the Deputy Secretary and District Chief of Beijing's Mentougou District, delivered opening remarks. Other notable attendees included Táng Lǐlì, Director of the Mentougou Park Management Committee; Líu Tiěyán, President of Beijing Zhongguancun Academy; Wáng Zhōngyuǎn, President of Beijing ZenITH Institute of Artificial Intelligence; Táng Kūn, Director of Huawei's Central Software Institute, Distributed and Parallel Software Laboratory; and over 150 faculty members, alumni, and students from the School of Artificial Intelligence at the Highling Institute of Artificial Intelligence, Renmin University of China. The forum was moderated by Lǐ Yànlì, Party Secretary of the Highling Institute of Artificial Intelligence. President Lin Shangli emphasized the strategic importance of accelerating the development of next-generation artificial intelligence (AI) for China to seize new opportunities in the realms of technological and industrial revolutions. He highlighted that this forum would significantly help Renmin University gather diverse insights and promote AI autonomous innovation, contributing to national and social smart governance. Lin called for innovative talent cultivation methods, interdisciplinary integration, and close collaboration among academia, industry, and government to produce leaders capable of navigating the complexities of AI. He expressed hope that the forum would serve as a robust platform to deepen the synergy between education, talent development, and innovation, setting a new standard for China's AI landscape. Qü Chénfēi noted that during the third edition of the Beijing AI Industry Innovation and Development Conference earlier this year, the Mentougou District and Renmin University signed a cooperation framework agreement on AI research, education, and industrial development. The establishment of the "Jingxi Wisdom Valley" marks a fruitful step in this partnership, presenting a vital opportunity to drive AI industry growth. Looking ahead, Qü expressed the desire to deepen collaborations with Renmin University, leveraging its research and talent resources alongside the district's industrial policies and resources to co-create an innovation hub in the AI sector. The official inauguration of the "Jingxi Wisdom Valley Renmin University of China AI and Smart Governance Research Center" was officiated by Lin Shangli, Qü Chénfēi, Táng Lǐlì, and Wény Jìróng, Executive Dean of the Highling Institute of Artificial Intelligence. Wény Jìróng then presented an overview of the institute's achievements and future plans. Over recent years, the college has made substantial progress in disciplinary development, high-level research, talent cultivation, and entrepreneurship. Moving forward, the institute aims to reform its educational system to nurture top-tier professionals, establish itself as a leading academic research center, advance AI applications in smart governance, attract elite talent, and create a vibrant innovation and entrepreneurship base to foster creativity and development. During the forum, teacher representatives Zhao Xin, Chén Xù, Dòu Zhìchéng, Lǐ Chóngxuān, Hú Dí, Wéi Zhěwèi, and Qí Qí unveiled several cutting-edge AI innovations, including a series of large models, the "Yulan-Wanshang: Multi-Agent Social Simulation Platform," "RUC Foreign Law Large Model," "Yulan-LLaDA: Diffusion Language Large Model," "Multimodal Large Model," "AI Depth Search Engine WebThinker," and a range of scientific intelligence and smart governance applications. The student innovation and entrepreneurship projects were also showcased. Doctoral candidates Gāo Yīzhào (2020), Zhāng Yáng (2021), Sūn Zhōngxiáng (2022), Tú Quán (2023), and undergraduate student Zhāng Jǐngchāo (2023) presented their projects, such as "ZhiZi Engine: Multimodal Content Understanding and Generation Application," "Miaoshou: AI-Driven Automation Research Platform," "Huishen: Large Model-Driven Trustworthy Mock Court," "Echo: Hyper-Realistic AI-Powered Stranger Social Application," and "WeaveWave: Multimodal AI Music Generation Model." The roundtable discussion focused on "Entrepreneurship and Innovation in the AGI Era." Participants included Táng Lǐlì, Líu Tiěyán, Wáng Zhōngyuǎn, Táng Kūn, as well as teacher representative Xǔ Hóngtēng and doctoral candidate Gāo Yīzhào. They engaged in a detailed exchange about how to effectively support young people in their entrepreneurial endeavors. The discussion was moderated by Wény Jìróng. This forum is part of Renmin University's "Global Alumni Discipline Development Forum" scheduled for 2025. It is jointly organized by the Highling Institute of Artificial Intelligence, the Engineering Research Center for Next-Generation Intelligent Search and Recommendation, and the Beijing Key Laboratory for Large Models and Smart Governance. The primary goal is to explore the fundamentals of AI research and the integration of industry, academia, and application to create a conducive environment for young innovators and entrepreneurs.
