ChatGPT Launches App Store for Developers to Submit and Publish AI Apps
ChatGPT has launched a new app directory, effectively creating an “app store” for its platform, OpenAI announced Wednesday. The move marks a significant expansion of the chatbot’s capabilities, allowing developers to submit their applications for review and potential inclusion in the ChatGPT experience. The new app directory is now accessible within the tools menu of the Chat interface, offering users direct access to third-party services and enhanced functionality. This follows OpenAI’s earlier announcement in October that it would integrate external apps into ChatGPT, enabling users to perform real-world actions without leaving the conversation. Major companies like Expedia, Spotify, Zillow, and Canva have already joined the initiative, allowing users to book travel, stream music, search for homes, and create designs directly through ChatGPT. Now, OpenAI is opening the door to a wider range of developers, signaling its intent to build a robust, open ecosystem. “Apps extend ChatGPT conversations by bringing in new context and letting users take actions like ordering groceries, turning an outline into a slide deck, or searching for an apartment,” OpenAI said in its announcement. The company’s Apps SDK, currently in beta, provides developers with the tools needed to build custom experiences tailored to ChatGPT users. Once ready, developers can submit their apps through the OpenAI Developer platform, where they can monitor the approval process and track progress. OpenAI confirmed that a number of approved apps will begin rolling out within ChatGPT over the coming year. This expansion is part of a broader strategy to deepen user engagement, increase the utility of the platform, and position ChatGPT as a central hub for AI-powered productivity and services. By inviting more developers into its ecosystem, OpenAI aims to accelerate innovation and offer users a more dynamic, personalized experience—further solidifying ChatGPT’s role not just as a conversational AI, but as a gateway to everyday digital tasks.
