AMD's Ryzen AI Max+ 392 Surges in Early Benchmarks, Eyes Q1 2026 Launch with Strong Gaming and AI Performance

AMD has introduced two new Strix Halo processors at CES 2026, including the Ryzen AI Max+ 392, a streamlined version of the flagship Ryzen AI Max+ 395 with 12 CPU cores instead of 16. While the chip was teased earlier, the first real-world performance data has now emerged via a Geekbench listing, offering early insight into its capabilities. Despite being a lower-core variant, the Ryzen AI Max+ 392 is delivering impressive results, particularly in single-threaded performance—critical for gaming. It scored 2,768 points on Geekbench, edging out the Ryzen AI Max+ 395’s 2,781-point benchmark, which is notable given the lower core count. The result places it in strong contention with high-end desktop CPUs like the Ryzen 9 7900X and 7950X3D, though those are desktop processors with different thermal and power envelopes. The benchmark was recorded on an Asus TUF Gaming A14 laptop, a device that earned "Best in Show" in the gaming laptops category at CES. This system features 64 GB of on-chip memory running at 8,000 MT/s and a CPU boost clock of 5.02 GHz—aligning with the official specifications for the chip. The Ryzen AI Max+ 392 is a 12-core, 24-thread processor equipped with 40 RDNA 3.5 Compute Units, matching the 395 in graphics performance, and includes 76 MB of L3 cache. It has a base TDP of 45W and a boost TDP of up to 120W, though Asus has capped it at 85W in this configuration. The Ryzen AI Max+ 392 is designed to balance high-performance computing with AI workloads and gaming, emphasizing efficiency and speed in demanding applications. While the chips are part of the Strix Halo series, general availability for laptops featuring these processors is expected in Q1 2026. Meanwhile, AMD’s more mainstream Ryzen AI 400 series is already listed for a January 22, 2026, release in China, signaling a broader rollout of AI-optimized processors across its product line. As the competition in the AI and gaming laptop space intensifies, these new chips could play a pivotal role in AMD’s strategy to capture market share.
