Grindr Tests $499/Month AI Premium Tier Edge Amid Push for 'gAI' Innovation

Grindr is testing a premium AI-powered subscription tier called "Edge," with price points reaching as high as $499.99 per month, according to a company representative. The feature is currently in early pilot phase, having first launched in Australia and New Zealand before expanding to select U.S. cities. During the test, Grindr is experimenting with personalized pricing that varies by user, with some users seeing weekly rates as high as $80 and monthly fees climbing to $349.99 or $499.99. At the top end, a full year of Edge could cost nearly $6,000. The company says the pilot is part of a broader effort to make Grindr "smarter, faster, and drive more meaningful connections." The Edge tier includes three core AI-driven features: Discover, which offers hyper-personalized match suggestions; Insights, which provides predictive signals before users send messages; and A-List, a curated feed that surfaces old conversations for re-engagement. In addition to these AI tools, Edge includes all benefits of Grindr Unlimited—the app’s current top-tier subscription—such as ad-free browsing and access to advanced profile features. For context, Grindr Unlimited’s monthly price on the App Store ranges from $27.99 to $44.99, significantly lower than Edge’s test rates. Meanwhile, competitors like Tinder, Hinge, and Bumble offer their most expensive plans at $49.99, $54.99, and $99.99 per month, respectively—still well below the upper end of Grindr’s Edge pricing. Grindr’s push toward a high-end AI subscription reflects its vision of integrating "gAI" — a play on "gay AI" — into its platform, aiming to enhance user experience for its nearly 15 million monthly active users. The move comes amid a challenging period for the company. Grindr’s stock, which had shown steady gains after its IPO, has declined by 38.06% over the past six months, signaling a need for new growth strategies and renewed user engagement.
