Apple Enhances Enterprise AI Control with New ChatGPT Configuration Options and IT Management Tools

Apple is enhancing its enterprise offerings with new AI controls as part of upcoming software updates set to launch in September. The company is introducing features that give IT administrators greater flexibility in managing how employees use artificial intelligence across Apple devices. A key addition is the ability to configure access to an enterprise version of OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This integration allows businesses to securely connect AI agents to their internal data, enabling advanced workflows while maintaining compliance and data privacy. However, Apple’s approach goes beyond just ChatGPT. According to Apple’s support documentation, IT teams will be able to restrict or allow any external AI provider, not just OpenAI. This open architecture means Apple can partner with other enterprise AI providers in the future without requiring major software overhauls. The move reflects Apple’s balanced strategy: while it has built its own AI capabilities under Apple Intelligence, it recognizes that many enterprises still rely on third-party AI services. Apple’s system ensures that AI requests are either processed by Apple’s Private Cloud Compute or sent to a selected external provider—never both—giving IT departments full control over data flow. This level of control extends to other AI features, such as writing tools and visual intelligence, which can be enabled or disabled based on organizational policy. Apple continues to promote its on-device and Private Cloud Compute models, but acknowledges that some companies may need time to adapt their infrastructure. By letting businesses choose between local and cloud processing, Apple supports a gradual transition. Beyond AI, Apple is rolling out several new enterprise-focused tools. A new API for Apple Business Manager will allow integration with third-party IT systems like mobile device management (MDM) platforms, inventory tools, and help desk software. This improves automation and streamlines device management. New Device Management features will simplify migrations, especially during mergers and acquisitions, when companies take over employee devices. Apple’s Return to Service tool, which wipes devices and prepares them for new users, will now support keeping all apps installed—saving time and bandwidth. This feature will also be available for the Vision Pro for the first time. For shared Macs, Apple is introducing an authenticated Guest Mode that lets employees log in using credentials from their identity provider. Upon logout, user data is erased while apps remain. Additionally, businesses can now add NFC readers to Macs, enabling employees to tap their Apple Watch or iPhone to sign in quickly and securely. All these updates will be included in the September software releases for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and other Apple devices. The rollout underscores Apple’s growing focus on serving enterprise customers with tools that combine powerful AI functionality with strong security and management control.
