Google Integrates Vibe-Coding Tool Opal into Gemini, Enabling No-Code App Creation via Natural Language
Google’s AI-powered vibe-coding tool Opal is now integrated into the Gemini web app, allowing users to build custom mini-apps directly within the platform. The feature, announced on Wednesday, brings Opal’s capabilities into the Gems manager, where users can create personalized versions of Gemini tailored to specific tasks—known as Gems. Introduced in 2024, Gems are specialized AI assistants designed for particular use cases. Examples include a learning coach, a brainstorming partner, a career guide, a coding companion, and an editor. With Opal’s integration, users can now go beyond using pre-built Gems and create their own custom applications using natural language prompts. Opal enables users to describe the app they want in plain English, and Gemini’s underlying AI models generate the app’s functionality. The tool features a visual editor that breaks down the app-building process into step-by-step components. Users can rearrange, connect, and modify these steps without writing code, making app creation accessible to non-developers. A new enhancement in Gemini’s interface automatically converts written prompts into structured step lists, offering a clearer view of how the app will function. For users seeking more advanced control, the Advanced Editor is available at opal.google.com, where they can fine-tune their creations with greater flexibility. Once built, the mini-apps can be saved and reused across sessions. This approach—often referred to as “vibe-coding”—has gained traction in recent years as AI tools lower the barrier to app development. Competitors in this space include startups like Lovable and Cursor, as well as offerings from major AI companies such as Anthropic and OpenAI. Consumer-focused platforms like Wabi also offer similar no-code AI app-building experiences. Gemini’s web app, where the new Opal integration is now live, can be accessed at gemini.google.com.
