Indonesia is making significant progress toward its "Golden 2045 Vision," an ambitious initiative aimed at leveraging digital technologies to boost productivity, efficiency, and innovation across various sectors. To support this vision, Indonesian telecommunications leader Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) has formed a strategic partnership with global tech giants Cisco and NVIDIA. The collaboration centers around the establishment of the Indonesia AI Center of Excellence (CoE), which is slated to advance secure AI technologies, cultivate local talent, and foster innovation through partnerships with startups. The CoE, led by the Ministry of Communications and Digital Affairs (Komdigi), will feature state-of-the-art AI infrastructure from NVIDIA, including Blackwell GPUs, Cloud Partner reference architectures, and AI Enterprise software. This full-stack setup will support research, development, and application of AI technologies. Cisco will contribute an intelligent security system, the Sovereign Security Operations Center Cloud Platform, which integrates AI-based threat detection, localized data control, and managed security services. During a fireside chat at Indonesia AI Day, IOH President Director and CEO Vikram Sinha, Cisco Chair and CEO Chuck Robbins, and NVIDIA Senior Vice President of Telecom Ronnie Vasishta highlighted the CoE's potential to empower Indonesians as creators and innovators in the AI field, rather than mere users. They emphasized that the AI era necessitates fundamental shifts in architecture and a digitally skilled workforce to drive sustainable growth. The CoE will operate under four core pillars. One of these initiatives involves enabling 28 independent software vendors and startups to develop advanced technologies that streamline workflows in higher education, research, food security, bureaucratic reform, smart cities, and healthcare. For instance, the Indonesian government is collaborating with Hippocratic AI to create an AI agent system using IOH's Bahasa Indonesian large language models (LLMs) to facilitate preventive health outreach. This includes helping women over 50 schedule mammograms, potentially reducing health complications and saving lives. Additionally, the CoE will help develop trustworthy AI frameworks aligned with Indonesian values to ensure the ethical use of AI. IOH's extensive network coverage across the archipelago will enable the CoE to reach a broad audience, including hundreds of millions of Bahasa Indonesian speakers. The company’s AI chatbot, powered by the Sahabat-AI collection of LLMs, can provide accurate responses to a wide range of queries, from updating national identification cards to explaining tax procedures. Moving forward, IOH and NVIDIA have plans to deploy AI-RAN technologies, which will extend AI capabilities to wireless networks, making them accessible to even more people. Industry experts have praised the initiative, seeing it as a significant step forward in Indonesia's digital transformation. By partnering with global leaders, Komdigi and IOH are not only enhancing local technological capabilities but also ensuring that AI development aligns with national values and priorities. This strategic move positions Indonesia to become a leader in sovereign AI, setting a benchmark for other countries aiming to build robust and secure AI ecosystems.
