AI as a Tool to Support Reminiscence Therapy The project builds on the principles of reminiscence therapy, a method that encourages individuals with dementia to share their personal experiences and memories. This therapy often uses physical props like photographs, music, and objects to improve mood, stimulate mental activity, and enhance cognitive function. Synthetic Memories aims to introduce a novel element into reminiscence therapy: AI-generated synthetic memories. In situations where tangible records are scarce or absent, AI tools can fill the gap by producing detailed and personalized visual and auditory cues. Unlike traditional props, these AI-generated visualizations can be revisited and explored multiple times, offering a more interactive and engaging experience. They are designed not to recreate the past perfectly but to serve as prompts for recalling memories and fostering dialogue. How It Works For the Synthetic Memories project, researchers collaborated with Edward, a participant with Alzheimer’s disease, to capture and visualize his personal recollections. Edward was interviewed to gather detailed descriptions of his past experiences. These narratives were then fed into Google’s ImageFX and VideoFX tools, which generated dream-like images and videos that captured the essence of his memories. Working closely with Edward, the team refined these synthetic memories until they aligned with his descriptions. One notable outcome was a visualization of Edward’s memory of hitchhiking in Spain with a friend. This generated image included specific details he mentioned, such as his leather jacket and rucksack. By incorporating these elements, the AI-produced content became a meaningful representation of Edward’s past. Opening New Possibilities The Synthetic Memories initiative highlights the potential of merging technology, art, and caregiving to support memory recall and emotional well-being. As the research continues, the project seeks to deepen our understanding of how AI and creativity can synergize to aid in reminiscence therapy. This collaboration not only enhances the therapeutic experience but also fosters deeper connections between individuals with dementia and their caregivers and families.
