OpenAI Launches Cost-Effective Lightweight Version of ChatGPT’s Deep Research Tool

OpenAI is launching a more cost-effective version of its ChatGPT deep research tool, designed to offer similar intelligence and quality while reducing operational expenses. Known as the "lightweight" model, it is now available to both free and paying users. The lightweight version utilizes OpenAI’s o4-mini model, which the company claims is almost as capable as the original deep research model. While the standard version generates comprehensive reports complete with citations and detailed summaries of its process, the new lightweight model provides shorter, yet still insightful, responses. According to OpenAI, this version maintains the depth and quality expected from ChatGPT without compromising on performance. For free users, the lightweight model allows up to five deep research tasks per month. Paid users, however, have additional benefits. When they reach their rate limits on the original deep research mode, the lightweight version will automatically activate. Specifically, Team and Plus users will be able to perform a combined total of 25 monthly tasks using either version, while Pro users can complete up to 250 tasks. Enterprise and Education users will gain access to the lightweight model next week, with the same task limits as Team and Plus users. This move is particularly significant for OpenAI, as it aims to cut down on the substantial costs associated with processing user interactions. The company has stated that it spends tens of millions of dollars each month handling simple requests like "please" and "thank you." By introducing a more efficient model, OpenAI hopes to maintain high-quality service while optimizing resource usage and financial sustainability.
