Spotify eyes more conversational AI interface as voice data fuels interactive upgrades

Spotify has been exploring different voice-based interfaces for some time, and recently introduced an AI DJ that recommends songs and allows users to make custom requests. Now, the company is suggesting that future advances in generative AI could lead to a more conversational and interactive experience with its service, based on remarks made during its second-quarter earnings call with investors on Tuesday. When asked about the impact of AI on its business, Spotify’s Chief Product and Technology Officer, Gustav Söderström, highlighted that users can already interact with the platform using natural language to request music, enabling Spotify to map specific phrases to particular songs. “This gives us a new dataset,” he explained. “Spotify has a unique dataset from its playlists, which is song-to-song — like how Amazon recommends products based on what others have bought.” He added that the voice interface is providing the company with fresh insights. “And that’s completely new to us, and it’s a very valuable dataset that we’re collecting very quickly,” he said. As a result, Söderström suggested that Spotify’s user experiences will become significantly more interactive. “You can already talk to Spotify, and you’re going to see that expand,” he said. Beyond just predicting what users might want to listen to, AI could allow Spotify to analyze a user’s listening history and their interactions with the AI DJ, enabling the system to “reason” through multiple steps. This points to the company’s interest in AI reasoning models that can handle more complex tasks and provide deeper personalization. The voice data comes from Spotify’s AI DJ feature, which was launched in May 2025 for Premium subscribers. Users can now make voice requests by pressing a button in the app, allowing them to adjust music, genre, or mood of a playlist through spoken commands. Spotify is also using AI internally to speed up product development and improve operational efficiency, including in areas like finance, as mentioned during the earnings call. In the second quarter, Spotify reported 276 million paying subscribers, a 12% increase from the previous year, and 696 million monthly active users. However, the company reported a net loss after missing revenue expectations, leading to a 10% drop in its stock price. The CEO, Daniel Ek, expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of the company’s advertising business during the call.
