xAI Appoints Former Morgan Stanley Banker Anthony Armstrong as New CFO Amid Leadership Shakeup

Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, xAI, has appointed Anthony Armstrong as its new chief financial officer, according to a report by the Financial Times citing anonymous sources. Armstrong, a former banker at Morgan Stanley, will oversee the finances of both xAI and X, following their merger in April. Armstrong has been working with xAI for several weeks and was formally named CFO in recent days. He previously advised Musk during the acquisition of Twitter, bringing valuable experience in high-stakes corporate transactions. His appointment comes after the departure of Mike Liberatore, who served as xAI’s CFO until July. The new CFO’s arrival follows a wave of executive exits at both xAI and X. In August, Robert Keele, the company’s general counsel, left after less than 18 months on the job. Senior legal counsel Raghu Rao also departed around the same time. Additionally, Igor Babuschkin, one of xAI’s co-founders, announced in August that he was leaving to launch a venture capital firm focused on AI safety research. Meanwhile, Linda Yaccarino, former CEO of X, stepped down in July. Armstrong will succeed Mahmoud Reza Banki, who is leaving X after serving as its CFO. While xAI has not publicly confirmed the appointment, the move signals a step toward stabilizing leadership as the company continues to scale its operations in the competitive AI landscape.
