Learners and Educators Emerge as AI’s New Super Users, Driving a Global Shift Toward Learning-First AI Adoption

For the past three years, Google has partnered with Ipsos on the “Our Life with AI” study to track how people globally are using artificial intelligence. The latest findings reveal a significant shift in behavior: for the first time, the primary reason people are using AI is learning. The survey, conducted late last year across 21 countries and involving over 21,000 participants, uncovered two key milestones. First, a majority of people in nearly every country now use AI chatbots. Second, the motivation behind that usage has evolved—from initial curiosity to genuine, everyday utility. Previously, entertainment was the top driver of AI use. But today, 74% of users say they use AI to “learn something new” or “understand a complex topic.” This marks a pivotal moment: people are moving beyond experimentation and embracing AI as a serious tool for personal and professional development. The trend is especially strong among students, teachers, and parents. In regions outside the United States, Canada, and Europe, public sentiment toward AI in education mirrors the enthusiasm seen in classrooms worldwide. Google’s AI tools are already playing a transformative role in learning environments, helping students grasp difficult concepts and enabling educators to deliver more personalized instruction. Still, the growing role of AI in education comes with challenges. As usage increases, so does the need for responsible design and clear safeguards—particularly for younger users. A separate study in Europe found that students are actively seeking guidance on how to use AI effectively and ethically. This highlights a critical responsibility: tech companies and governments must work together to ensure these tools are safe, equitable, and accessible. There’s also the “5% problem”—the risk that only the most privileged or highly motivated individuals will benefit from AI-powered learning, leaving others behind. The survey shows that the public expects both industry and policymakers to act to close this gap and ensure AI serves the broader public good. Google’s guiding principle in education is clear: improve learning outcomes for everyone and empower teachers to focus on what matters most—connecting with students. Tools like Gemini’s Guided Learning Mode, Gemini for Education, Google AI Pro for Education, and NotebookLM are designed with this mission in mind. They support personalized learning, reduce administrative workloads, and help educators deliver more impactful instruction. By grounding these innovations in learning science and collaborating closely with educators, students, and subject matter experts, Google is committed to advancing AI in education responsibly. The goal is not just to enhance learning, but to ensure that every person, regardless of background, can reach their full potential with the help of AI.
