Snapchat Unveils New AI Image Generator Lens for Custom Text-to-Image Creation

Snapchat is introducing a new Lens that enables users to generate and edit images using text prompts through an AI-powered image generator. The feature, called the “Imagine Lens,” is now available to Snapchat+ Platinum and Lens+ subscribers, according to a preview shared with TechCrunch. Imagine Lens marks Snapchat’s first open prompt image generation tool, allowing users to create custom visuals by typing in their own descriptions. Whether it’s “a grumpy cat wearing a crown” or “turn me into an alien with glowing eyes,” users can generate unique images based on their input. The Lens also includes a set of pre-designed prompts to spark creativity, such as “Turn me into a four to five panel comic where something unexpected but heroic happens,” “Make me into a funny caricature,” or “Make this person skydive through a rainbow.” Once an image is created, users can share it with friends, post it to their Story, or export it outside of Snapchat. The caption bar at the bottom of the screen lets users easily edit or refine their prompts in real time, giving them full control over the final output. While Snapchat has previously offered generative AI Lenses, this is the first time the company has introduced a tool that lets users freely input custom text prompts to generate original visuals. The company hasn’t confirmed whether the new Lens uses its newly unveiled AI text-to-image research model for mobile devices, which it announced earlier this year. However, Snap did say that its Lenses are powered by a mix of in-house AI models and leading industry technologies. Snapchat+ Platinum subscribers, priced at $15.99 per month, and Lens+ subscribers, at $8.99 per month, can access Imagine Lens by tapping the front of the Lens Carousel or browsing the Exclusive section. The feature is part of Snap’s broader push to integrate AI into its core product, building on its reputation as a leader in augmented reality. In recent months, the company has expanded its AI offerings, launching a standalone Lens Studio app for iOS and a web-based version to help creators build AR experiences more easily. In March, Snap also introduced its first video generative AI Lenses, further demonstrating its commitment to advancing AI-powered creativity.
