Google Offers Voluntary Exit Packages to Some Business Unit Employees Amid Strategic Shifts

Google is offering voluntary exit packages to some employees within its global business organization (GBO), according to an internal email sent by chief business officer Philipp Schindler to staff on Tuesday. The move targets specific roles across the GBO in the United States, including those in solutions teams, sales, and corporate development, but excludes America’s large customer sales teams and other customer-facing positions. In the memo, Schindler acknowledged the company’s strong start to the year, citing accomplishments from 2025. “We’re starting the year in a strong position thanks to everything you accomplished in 2025,” he wrote. However, he stressed that the pace of innovation remains intense and the stakes are high, emphasizing the need for all GBO employees to be fully committed to the company’s mission and to embrace AI as a core driver of impact. Employees who are not enjoying the current pace of work or are ready to move on may choose to leave with a severance package through the voluntary exit program (VEP). Schindler explained that while all GBO functions are vital to Google’s long-term strategy, the company decided not to extend the program to certain customer-facing roles to minimize disruption to clients. This is not the first time Google has offered such packages. In June of the previous year, the company provided buyouts to some U.S.-based employees amid its enforcement of a return-to-office policy. Earlier in October, Google extended similar offers to employees in the YouTube division as part of a broader organizational restructuring. Google has not yet responded to a request for comment from Business Insider regarding the latest initiative.
