Volvo's New EX60 Electric SUV Targets Range Anxiety with 400-Mile Range, Tesla Charging, and Nvidia-Google Tech
Volvo has unveiled the 2027 EX60, its most advanced electric SUV yet, promising to “end range anxiety” with an estimated range of 300 to 400 miles depending on the trim. As the electric counterpart to its best-selling XC60, the EX60 marks a pivotal moment for the Swedish automaker, which is aiming to regain momentum in a challenging EV market. The EX60 is built on Volvo’s new dedicated electric vehicle platform and features three battery options, delivering impressive efficiency and performance. It comes equipped with North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports, allowing it to charge at Tesla Superchargers across the United States—a significant advantage for long-distance drivers. The vehicle’s design blends familiar proportions with modern touches. It retains the XC60’s compact, premium SUV silhouette while introducing subtle updates, including electronic door handles integrated into slim fins along the window trim—inspired by Ford’s design language and intended to reduce the risk of legal scrutiny similar to that faced by Tesla. Inside, the EX60 embraces Volvo’s signature Scandinavian minimalism. The dashboard is button-free, relying on a clean, digital interface. The cabin uses light, natural materials and soft curves, creating a serene, high-end atmosphere. Volvo is leaning heavily on strategic partnerships to power the EX60’s tech. The interior features advanced AI and computing capabilities powered by Nvidia’s high-performance chips and deep integration with Google’s AI ecosystem, including Google Assistant and Android Automotive OS. These upgrades are central to Volvo’s push for smarter, more intuitive in-car experiences. The EX60 also includes a frunk—front trunk—offering three cubic feet of storage space, roughly the size of a standard American microwave. This adds practicality for road trips and everyday use. Looking ahead, Volvo plans to expand the EX60 lineup with a rugged off-road variant called the Cross Country, set to launch in 2028. This version will feature a one-inch suspension lift, reinforced metal skid plates on the front and rear bumpers, and dual electric motors for enhanced traction and performance. The EX60 is expected to debut in the U.S. market in summer 2026, with a starting price of $55,000. It enters a crowded luxury EV segment, competing directly with the upcoming BMW iX3 and Mercedes-Benz’s new GLC with EQ Technology, both of which also target around 400 miles of range. The launch comes after a turbulent period for Volvo’s EV division, including software issues with the EX30 and EX90, and the departure of CEO Jim Rowan in March 2025. Håkan Samuelsson has returned as CEO, leading the company with renewed focus on reliability, innovation, and customer trust. With its extended range, cutting-edge tech, and strategic partnerships, the EX60 represents Volvo’s most ambitious bet yet to reclaim its position in the global electric vehicle race.
