The State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering at Tsinghua University's Department of Chemical Engineering hosts a theme event titled "Promoting the Spirit of Scientists and Stimulating Innovation Across Society."

### Abstract: Promoting the Spirit of Scientists and Sparking Innovation Across Society On May 26, during the annual National Science and Technology Week, the State Key Laboratory of Chemical Engineering (SKLChE) organized a virtual event titled "Promoting the Spirit of Scientists and Sparking Innovation Across Society." The event aimed to engage and inspire a young audience through online science popularization reports. Professor Xinlei Liu from the Tianjin University (TJU) branch of the laboratory moderated the session. In his opening remarks, Professor Guangsheng Luo, the Director of SKLChE, highlighted the laboratory's achievements in team building and original research, emphasizing its role in addressing significant national needs through collective efforts. He called for the promotion of the spirit of patriotism, innovation, practicality, dedication, collaboration, and education to drive the development of new productive forces, support high-quality growth, and contribute to the modernization of China. Professor Luo also expressed the hope that this open event would increase public awareness of international chemical engineering advancements, particularly in the areas of green chemistry and its profound impact on national and industrial development. Four experts from different branches of the SKLChE delivered presentations on cutting-edge topics in chemical engineering. These included: 1. **Nuclear Fuel** - Associate Professor Shaowei Li from the Tsinghua University (THU) branch discussed the principles of nuclear reactor power generation and the recovery of uranium and plutonium, explaining the importance of these processes in energy and safety. 2. **Membrane-Based Seawater Desalination** - Researcher Yue Wang from the TJU branch introduced an autonomous and controllable energy recovery device, focusing on its efficiency and potential in addressing water scarcity. 3. **Recycling of Waste Plastics** - Professor Jing Zhang from the East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST) branch presented various methods of recycling different types of waste plastics, particularly the process of thermal cracking under an inert atmosphere, and its implications for environmental sustainability. 4. **Natural Cellulose** - Researcher Xuan Yang from the Zhejiang University (ZJU) branch shared insights into the research and development of functional fibers from natural cellulose, detailing the latest advancements and their applications. Following the presentations, the speakers engaged in an interactive Q&A session with the audience, addressing questions on topics such as the safety of nuclear reactor containment and waste disposal, the advantages of high-pressure pumps, the conversion of plastics in inert environments, and the challenges faced in the production of high-end chemicals. This interaction not only clarified complex scientific concepts but also sparked curiosity and interest among the participants. The event was live-streamed on multiple platforms, including Research Cloud-Bilibili, Research Cloud-Weibo, Research Cloud-Youdao Dictionary, and Research Cloud-WeChat Video Channel, attracting over 22,000 viewers. The widespread engagement underscored the event's success in fostering a deeper understanding of chemical engineering and its vital role in societal and industrial innovation. Through this initiative, the SKLChE not only honored the dedication and achievements of scientists but also aimed to cultivate a new generation of innovators and thinkers, emphasizing the importance of science and technology in shaping a sustainable and advanced future.
