Autodesk Sues Google Over Use of 'Flow' Trademark for AI Video Tool
Autodesk has filed a lawsuit against Google over the use of the name "Flow" for its newly launched AI video generation tool, alleging trademark infringement. The legal action, filed in a California court last week, claims that Google’s use of the name is likely to confuse customers, particularly given Autodesk’s long-standing use of the "Flow" brand in its own AI-powered creative tools. Autodesk first introduced Flow in 2022 as a cloud-based platform designed for filmmakers and digital creators. Over time, it expanded the Flow ecosystem with products like Flow Studio, which leverages AI to convert live-action footage into 3D scenes. The company has built a significant presence in the creative software space under the Flow brand. Google launched its own AI video generator, also called Flow, in May 2025. Shortly after, Autodesk claims it reached out to Google requesting that the company cease using the "Flow" name. According to Autodesk, Google responded by saying it would market the product as “Google Flow” rather than simply “Flow.” However, the company argues that Google misrepresented its intentions. Autodesk’s lawsuit highlights that Google filed a trademark application for the standalone name "Flow" in the Kingdom of Tongo—a jurisdiction where such filings are not publicly accessible—before submitting a formal application to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. The company contends this move was a strategic attempt to secure the name ahead of its official U.S. filing. The lawsuit also cites evidence of consumer confusion, noting that individuals on social media, in industry publications, and even among Google Flow users have mistakenly referred to Google’s product as “Flow Studio.” Autodesk argues this blurring of branding undermines its own product identity and could harm its business. The company is seeking a court order to prevent Google from using the "Flow" trademark, as well as unspecified damages for the alleged infringement. Google has not yet issued a public response to the lawsuit.
