ChatGPT Mobile App Surges Past $2B in Consumer Spending, Leaving Rivals in the Dust
ChatGPT’s mobile app has generated $2 billion in global consumer spending since its launch in May 2023, according to a new analysis by app intelligence firm Appfigures. This figure represents a staggering 30 times the combined lifetime revenue of its main mobile competitors—Claude, Copilot, and Grok—highlighting the app’s dominant position in the consumer AI space. This year alone, from January to July 2025, the app has earned $1.35 billion, a 673% increase compared to the $174 million it made during the same period in 2024. On average, ChatGPT’s mobile app now brings in nearly $193 million per month, up from just $25 million a month last year. In comparison, Grok—xAI’s AI assistant—has generated approximately $25.6 million in consumer spending this year, with an average monthly revenue of $3.6 million. That’s roughly 1.9% of ChatGPT’s monthly earnings, or about 53 times less. The data underscores the significant gap between ChatGPT and its rivals in terms of consumer adoption and willingness to pay. While these figures reflect only mobile app revenue, they offer a clear snapshot of how users engage with AI assistants through app stores. It’s important to note that AI companies also earn revenue through web subscriptions, team plans, and API usage, which are not captured in these app store metrics. ChatGPT’s lifetime revenue per download stands at $2.91, outpacing Claude’s $2.55, Grok’s $0.75, and Copilot’s $0.28. In the United States, the average spending per download is even higher at $10, accounting for 38% of the app’s total revenue to date. Germany follows as the second-largest market, contributing 5.3% of lifetime spending. In terms of downloads, ChatGPT has been installed an estimated 690 million times worldwide. That’s far ahead of Grok, which has reached 39.5 million installs. This disparity becomes even more apparent when considering that Grok only launched its standalone iOS app in early January 2025 and arrived on Google Play on March 4—months after ChatGPT’s initial mobile rollout. Globally, ChatGPT’s average monthly downloads have surged to about 45 million, a 180% increase from the 16 million recorded during the same period in 2024. In 2025 alone, the app has been downloaded 318 million times—2.8 times more than the 113 million installs during the same period last year. India is currently the top market by install volume, accounting for 13.7% of all lifetime downloads, followed by the U.S. at 10.3%. These figures provide context for recent criticisms from Elon Musk, who has accused Apple’s App Store of favoring ChatGPT in its rankings, particularly given the app’s dominance in the Top Charts.
