Microsoft Unveils Intel-Powered Surface Laptop 5G, Set to Ship in August for $1,799

Microsoft has announced a new 5G version of its Surface Laptop, set to ship on August 26th starting at $1,799.99. The Surface Laptop 5G is powered by Intel’s Core Ultra Series 2 processors and includes an NPU that enables access to Microsoft’s latest Copilot Plus AI features. The Surface Laptop 5G closely resembles the existing 13.8-inch Surface Laptop 7 but incorporates internal modifications to support a 5G modem and both physical nano SIM and eSIM capabilities. At the base level, the Surface Laptop 5G will come equipped with an Intel Core Ultra 5, 16GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. The top-tier model, priced at $2,699, will feature Intel’s Core Ultra 7 processor, 32GB of RAM, and 1TB of storage. All models will be available in the signature Surface platinum silver color. According to Nancie Gaskill, General Manager of the Surface business, Microsoft didn’t simply integrate a standard 5G modem. Instead, they developed a sophisticated antenna system designed to adapt dynamically to its environment. “At the heart of Surface Laptop 5G is a dynamic antenna system that continuously adjusts to its surroundings,” says Gaskill. This system utilizes six antennas that can automatically reconfigure based on the laptop’s usage and positioning. To achieve this, Microsoft created a custom multi-layered laminate material that allows radio signals to pass through without degrading performance, while maintaining the durability and premium feel that users expect. “This new material ensures reliable 5G connectivity without compromising the portability or design of the device,” adds Gaskill. Microsoft has rigorously tested the 5G hardware with over 100 mobile network operators across more than 50 countries. The 5G capability will enable users to stay connected on the go and also function as a 5G mobile hotspot, sharing the connection with other devices via Wi-Fi. While the Surface Laptop 5G is targeted primarily at businesses, Microsoft will also begin offering the latest 13-inch Surface Laptop and 12-inch Surface Pro models to enterprise customers starting today. These updates aim to provide business users with enhanced connectivity and productivity tools, ensuring they stay ahead in a rapidly evolving technology landscape.
