Yale’s New Z-Wave Lock Disarms ADT Security System with Fingerprint Technology

Yale's new smart lock, the Assure Lock 2 Touch with Z-Wave, offers a seamless way to unlock your door and disarm your ADT security system using a fingerprint. Priced at $279.99, this lock is a promising solution for users who enjoyed the integrated functionality of the discontinued Nest Secure system and Nest X Yale Lock. The ADT Plus security system, launched last year, is seen as a modern successor to Nest Secure. Shortly before Google decided to discontinue its own security offerings, the company invested $450 million in ADT. Yale has joined forces with ADT to develop this new lock, which fills the void left by the Nest X Yale Lock in the Google ecosystem. Unlike previous locks that integrated with ADT, the Assure Lock 2 Touch is the first to combine Z-Wave connectivity with fingerprint access. Z-Wave is a wireless communication protocol that operates on the 800-900 MHz frequency band and requires a hub. The integration with ADT Plus utilizes Z-Wave's new User Credential Command Class, a more secure approach to managing passwords and PIN codes within a Z-Wave network. Thanks to this, the lock can communicate directly with ADT's security base to both unlock the door and disarm the system in one simple step. While the lock can function independently with any compatible Z-Wave system, the enhanced security system control is currently exclusive to ADT Plus. ADT is the first security company to adopt this Command Class standard, potentially paving the way for future compatibility with other systems. This is only the second Z-Wave-compatible lock to feature a fingerprint reader, but the first to offer comprehensive control over a security system through fingerprint recognition. The earlier entry by Ultraloq merely unlocked the door, lacking the additional disarming capability provided by Yale’s new model. The Assure Lock 2 Touch with Z-Wave is essentially a reimagined version of Yale's existing smart lock, which previously relied on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for connectivity. In addition to fingerprint access, it supports app control via the ADT app, a built-in keypad, and traditional key entry. Like many of Yale’s smart locks, the Z-Wave connectivity is achieved through a swappable module. However, this module is only available as part of the new lock, not as a standalone accessory for older models. One significant advantage of the Assure Lock 2 Touch is its integration with ADT Plus’s Trusted Neighbors feature, which necessitates ADT’s professional monitoring service (priced at a minimum of $24.99 per month). This feature allows you to grant automated access to authorized individuals when you're away from home. The lock can recognize their fingerprints, disarming the security system and opening the door without requiring a code or key. This level of convenience and security is particularly appealing to homeowners who frequently need to provide access to service providers or trusted guests. ADT has also rolled out Home Away modes, which automate the arming and disarming of your security system based on the location of smartphones connected to your household. When all members are out, the system arms and locks the doors; upon arrival, it disarms and unlocks, ensuring a smooth transition for anyone entering or leaving your home. When combined with the fingerprint-controlled lock, managing your ADT security system becomes even more streamlined. Overall, the Yale Assure Lock 2 Touch with Z-Wave is a significant advancement in home security, offering both convenience and enhanced security features. Its ability to integrate seamlessly with ADT Plus and leverage modern technologies like Z-Wave and fingerprint recognition makes it a compelling choice for tech-savvy homeowners looking to simplify their smart home setup.
