Google Introduces Customizable Gemini Chatbots in Docs, Sheets, and Gmail for Enhanced Workspace Efficiency

Google has introduced a new feature that allows Workspace users to access customizable versions of its Gemini AI assistant, known as "Gems," directly within Google Docs, Slides, Sheets, Drive, and Gmail. This integration eliminates the need to switch between apps, making it easier for users to leverage Gemini’s specialized capabilities without interruption. "Gems can help you further leverage the power of Gemini in a way that's customized to your needs more efficiently by minimizing repetitive prompting," Google stated in its announcement. Users can tailor their Gems to become "experts" in specific tasks, such as brand-tailored copywriting or exam revision. They can also upload personal files to provide these chatbots with context and resources tailored to their needs. Google offers a variety of pre-made Gems for common tasks, including text editing, coding, creating sales pitches, and more. Some examples of how Workspace users can utilize Gems include: In Google Docs: Using a Gem to generate brand-specific content or summarize long documents. In Google Sheets: Employing a Gem to analyze data or create charts. In Google Slides: Leveraging a Gem to design presentations or suggest improvements. In Gmail: Utilizing a Gem to draft emails quickly or refine existing messages. Until now, Gems were only accessible through the Gemini app. While custom Gems cannot be created directly within the Workspace apps, users can set them up by visiting gemini.google.com/gems/create or selecting the "Create a new Gem" option in the Workspace side panel. The feature supports Workspace functionalities such as @-mentions and file/folder access for both custom and pre-made Gems. The update began rolling out on July 2nd, but Google warns it may take longer than 15 days to reach all users. This enhancement underscores Google’s commitment to integrating advanced AI tools seamlessly into its productivity suite, helping users enhance their efficiency and creativity.
