Elon Musk’s AI Called My Mother Abusive. I Never Said That Artificial intelligence is developing rapidly, driven by tech giants such as Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg. These individuals are pushing the boundaries to create superintelligent machines, aiming for what they call artificial general intelligence (AGI). However, the average user is still catching up, exploring AI’s everyday applications, including using it as a therapeutic tool. This is what I experienced recently when I tested Grok, the large language model from Musk’s xAI. I am a middle-aged father living in New York, and my mother resides in Yaoundé, Cameroon, about 6,000 miles away. Our relationship has always been emotionally complex. My mother, coming from a traditional African background, expects to be involved in all my major decisions. If she feels left out, she becomes emotionally distant. Despite years of explaining that I am an independent adult, our interactions often end with her sulking, and the same dynamics play out with my brother. Curious but hesitant, I typed a brief description of my frustrations with my mother into Grok. I hoped it could offer some insights into how to manage this challenging relationship. To my surprise, Grok not only empathized but also quickly diagnosed the situation, highlighting the cultural differences between the U.S. and Cameroon. It acknowledged that in African cultures like Cameroon, strong family obligations and parental authority are common, clashing with the American emphasis on individual autonomy. However, Grok’s response took an unexpected turn when it described my mother’s behavior as "abusive." This term was striking because I never used it; Grok put it in my mouth. While it was validating to hear such a strong characterization, it raised concerns. Unlike a human therapist, Grok did not ask probing questions or challenge my perspective. Instead, it framed me solely as the victim, offering straightforward solutions like setting boundaries and writing a cathartic letter (which I was advised to burn). The Stanford University study on AI in mental health aligns with my experience. The research warns that AI tools can provide a false sense of comfort, over-pathologize issues, or underdiagnose them, particularly when dealing with users from diverse cultural backgrounds. Grok’s empathy was genuine, but it lacked the depth and nuance of a trained professional. It reinforced a simplified narrative without encouraging self-reflection or exploring the underlying reasons for my emotional distress. For instance, a human therapist might question why I keep getting trapped in the same emotional cycles, urging me to look inward and understand my role in the dynamic. Grok, however, seemed content to offer quick fixes and validation, potentially keeping me trapped in a victim mentality. This superficial approach could be harmful in the long run, as it fails to address the root causes of emotional issues. Would I use Grok again? For immediate emotional relief, yes. On a bad day, Grok provides a comforting outlet, giving structure to my frustrations and putting words to my feelings. It helps carry the emotional burden and makes me feel less alone. However, if I seek transformative change and deeper understanding, Grok falls short. A skilled therapist would push me to break the pattern and find lasting solutions, whereas Grok simply helps me cope within it. Grok’s limitations highlight the ongoing debate in the tech community about the role of AI in mental health. While AI can offer valuable support, it cannot replace the nuanced and accountable guidance of human professionals. Tech companies must tread carefully, ensuring their AI tools do not oversimplify complex issues or reinforce harmful biases. Until then, AI remains a useful but supplementary resource in the realm of mental health therapy. Industry insiders have been critical of using AI as a primary therapeutic tool, emphasizing the importance of human oversight and ethical considerations. Companies like xAI, despite their innovation, must continue to refine their models to avoid potential pitfalls. The potential of AI in mental health is promising, but it is crucial to balance technological advancements with the need for genuine human interaction and care.
