NTT Debuts World’s First Real-Time International Kabuki Co-Production Using IOWN All-Photonics Network at Expo 2025
NTT Corporation (NTT) made history at Expo 2025 in Tokyo and Osaka, Japan, with the world's first real-time, international co-production of "CHO KABUKI Powered by IOWN." The event, held on May 24 and May 25, 2025, featured live and virtual performers from Osaka and Taipei, Taiwan, seamlessly integrated through the NTT Innovative Optical and Wireless Network (IOWN) All-Photonics Network (APN). The performance reimagined the traditional Kabuki theater, blending live and virtual elements to tell the story of Princess Miku (portrayed by the holographic character Hatsune Miku) and Tadanobu (played by renowned Kabuki actor Shidō Nakamura). They embarked on a quest to battle the Azure Dragon while traveling through the mythological Thousand Cherry Blossoms, symbolizing the journey from ancient times to the present day. The IOWN APN technology ensured that the synchronized movements of performers in both locations appeared as though they were on the same stage, providing an unprecedented level of realism and immersion. To enhance audience engagement, NTT employed cross-modal search technology to detect and analyze the swing of penlights. This interactive feature allowed the audience to contribute to the story, specifically in the efforts to save Princess Miku. The technology not only added a dynamic element to the performance but also bridged the gap between the performers and the spectators, creating a truly collaborative experience. Prior to the main performances, NTT used its AnotherMe® digital twin technology and advanced AI to create a multilingual virtual version of Shidō Nakamura. Referred to as the "Shidō Twin," this digital character guided visitors to the venue and explained how to use designated earphones to fully enjoy the Kabuki performance. The Shidō Twin was capable of speaking in Japanese, English, and Chinese, further expanding the reach and accessibility of the event. "CHO KABUKI Powered by IOWN" was sponsored by NTT and produced in collaboration with Shochiku Co., Ltd. and Dwango Co., Ltd., with additional support from Chunghwa Telecom, which activated the International IOWN APN in August 2024. This groundbreaking collaboration demonstrated the potential of advanced network technologies to transform the way we experience live performances globally. About the IOWN APN The IOWN All-Photonics Network (APN) is a cutting-edge technology designed to optimize long-distance data transfer by eliminating optical-electronic-optical conversions. This results in three significant improvements: a 100x increase in power consumption efficiency, a 125x increase in transmission capacity, and a 200x reduction in latency compared to traditional systems. These enhancements make the IOWN APN a crucial component in NTT's broader IOWN Initiative, which envisions a smarter, connected world by 2030. The initiative also focuses on advancing Digital Twin Computing and a Cognitive Foundation to leverage the full potential of AI, robotics, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The IOWN Global Forum, a non-profit organization founded in 2020 by NTT, Intel, and the Sony Group, supports the development and implementation of IOWN technologies. With over 150 member companies and organizations, the forum plays a pivotal role in driving global innovation and collaboration in photonics-based technologies. The NTT Pavilion Experience at Expo 2025 The NTT Pavilion at Expo 2025, themed "Parallel Travel," invited visitors to explore the evolution of communications technologies. Divided into three zones, the pavilion showcased a timeline from historical communication methods like letters and telegrams to future advancements enabled by IOWN. One of the highlights was a replay of a special live performance by the Japanese band Perfume, which took place on April 2, 2025, via the IOWN APN. A behind-the-scenes video detailing the technological innovations behind this performance can be found on the NTT Official Channel YouTube page.
