OpenAI Enhances ChatGPT with Company Knowledge Feature for Smarter Workplace Search
OpenAI has introduced a new feature for ChatGPT designed to help business, enterprise, and education users more efficiently access and search through workplace information without leaving their current apps. The “company knowledge” update, powered by a version of GPT-5, integrates directly with tools like Slack, SharePoint, Google Drive, and GitHub, enabling the AI to search across multiple data sources simultaneously to deliver more accurate and comprehensive answers. The goal is to turn ChatGPT into a conversational search engine tailored for work environments, allowing users to quickly find relevant information from internal communications, documents, and support systems. This update builds on earlier beta features launched in June, offering a more robust and seamless experience than previous app integrations. OpenAI says the GPT-5-powered system is specifically trained to handle complex, multi-source queries. It can process ambiguous questions—such as “Where did we land on company goals for next year?”—by conducting parallel searches across different platforms, identifying conflicting details, and reconciling them to provide a clear, well-informed response. The system also uses date filters and can “think while it searches,” meaning it can reason through time-sensitive or context-dependent information. Every response includes clear citations, showing users exactly where the information came from, which helps build trust in the results. For example, if a user is preparing for a client meeting, ChatGPT can generate a detailed briefing by pulling in recent Slack messages, key email threads, notes from Google Docs, and support ticket updates from Intercom—all within a single conversation. The company knowledge feature must be manually enabled at the start of each new chat. When active, it disables web browsing and the ability to generate charts or images. However, OpenAI notes that ChatGPT can still answer questions using connected apps without the feature turned on, though responses will lack the same depth and detailed sourcing. OpenAI plans to expand the capabilities of company knowledge in future updates, integrating it with additional ChatGPT functions and potentially supporting more platforms and workflows. This move comes as AI competition intensifies, with rivals like Anthropic recently launching similar tools—such as its “Skills” feature for Claude AI—to enhance AI agents’ performance on specific work tasks.
