Enterprises Now Prefer Anthropic’s AI Models Over OpenAI, Report Shows

Enterprises are increasingly turning to Anthropic’s AI models over those from OpenAI and other competitors, according to a new report from Menlo Ventures released on Thursday. The data reveals that Anthropic now holds a 32% share of the enterprise large language model (LLM) market by usage, surpassing OpenAI, which ranks second with 25%. This marks a significant shift from just a few years ago. In 2023, OpenAI commanded 50% of the enterprise LLM market, while Anthropic held just 12%. Since then, OpenAI’s enterprise market share has declined sharply, while Anthropic’s has steadily grown, driven by strong performance and enterprise trust. The report also highlights a growing preference for closed, proprietary models—like those from Anthropic and OpenAI—over open-source alternatives. More than half of surveyed enterprises reported not using open-source models at all. By mid-2025, only 13% of enterprise daily workloads relied on open-source models, down from 19% at the start of the year. Meta continues to lead in the open-source space. In the specific domain of coding, Anthropic’s dominance is even more pronounced. The company holds a 42% market share, more than double OpenAI’s 21%. This suggests that enterprise developers and engineering teams favor Claude for technical tasks. The surge in Anthropic’s enterprise adoption is largely attributed to the release of its Claude Sonnet 3.5 in June 2024, which delivered improved performance, reliability, and safety features. The subsequent launch of Claude Sonnet 3.7 in February 2025 further solidified its position, offering faster reasoning, enhanced code generation, and better handling of complex workflows. These findings align with growing industry sentiment that enterprise and startup developers value Anthropic’s models for their consistency, security, and alignment with business needs. Meanwhile, OpenAI maintains a strong presence in the consumer space, with the company recently reporting that users send over 2.5 billion prompts to ChatGPT daily. As enterprises prioritize control, compliance, and performance over open access, Anthropic’s focus on safety and reliability appears to be paying off. The shift underscores a broader trend: while consumer AI adoption remains high, the enterprise sector is increasingly favoring closed, well-supported models from companies that prioritize trust and scalability.
