WhatsApp, the world's most popular messaging app owned by Meta, has emerged as a key battleground for AI chatbots, including those from rivals like OpenAI and Perplexity. This development highlights the growing importance of consumer AI and the intense competition among tech giants to capture user attention and trust. Salesforce software engineer Jayant Tyagi, like many others, finds it convenient to access ChatGPT directly within WhatsApp rather than using a separate app or website. "I'm already an avid WhatsApp user, so it makes sense to access ChatGPT right there instead of installing yet another app," he explained. WhatsApp's 3 billion users worldwide are increasingly engaging with various AI assistants, making it a critical platform for AI adoption. CEO Mark Zuckerberg noted during Meta's April earnings call that WhatsApp is "the largest surface that people use Meta AI on," emphasizing its strong user base. However, the app is becoming an AI free-for-all, with multiple chatbots vying for attention. OpenAI made ChatGPT available on WhatsApp late last year, aiming to make the technology more accessible. Perplexity's chatbot, launched on WhatsApp in the spring, handles over 1 million queries daily and experienced overwhelming demand at its release, briefly crashing the service. These rival chatbots integrate into WhatsApp through the WhatsApp Business Platform, a paid service that allows businesses to communicate with users. This platform generates about $1 billion annually for Meta and provides a straightforward channel for AI companies to reach WhatsApp's vast user base, particularly in emerging markets like India and Brazil, where the app is a primary communication tool. The diverse set of chatbots offers users a range of functionalities, from generating images and rephrasing messages to fact-checking misinformation. Naga Santhosh Reddy Vootukuri, an engineering manager at Microsoft, frequently uses Meta AI in group chats to create memes and polls. However, for more creative tasks, he prefers ChatGPT, and for accurate search results, he trusts Perplexity. "I use Meta AI a lot in groups to generate memes and create polls," he said. "But if I want something more creative, like Ghibli-style images, I'll go to ChatGPT. I still trust Perplexity's search the most." WhatsApp's environment also helps address the issue of misinformation. Users are leveraging AI chatbots to verify the authenticity of forwarded content, particularly political videos. Perplexity's CEO, Aravind Srinivas, encouraged users to forward dubious messages to the Perplexity bot for instant fact-checking. "WhatsApp, in particular, often struggles with misinformation through forwarded messages," a Perplexity spokesperson explained, highlighting the chatbot's role in combatting this problem. Another advantage of AI chatbots on WhatsApp is their availability even during in-flight mode. Many airlines restrict in-flight WiFi to basic messaging apps, allowing users to access these chatbots seamlessly even when flying. This feature has gained popularity, with several users sharing their experiences on social media. For power users, the versatility of having multiple AI chatbots within WhatsApp is a boon. Manas Paldhe, a software engineer at Infinitus Systems, uses Meta AI for casual tasks and ChatGPT for serious writing or deeper work. "I use Meta AI a lot for rephrasing messages or casual stuff where I don't care about accuracy," he said. "But when I want a more retrieval-based approach, such as getting links to news articles, I turn to Perplexity. For serious writing or deeper work, I still go back to ChatGPT." This growing integration of AI chatbots into WhatsApp presents a significant challenge for Meta. While Meta AI has the advantage of native integration, especially in group chats, the presence of multiple, highly capable AI assistants could dilute user loyalty to any single platform. Industry insiders suggest that this competitive landscape is beneficial for consumers, as it encourages innovation and better services. "The best chatbot is simply the one that gets the job done, no matter where it lives," noted Sumit Gupta, an engineer at Notion. Meta, however, remains focused on enhancing its AI capabilities and solidifying its position. The company plans to share more details about its AI efforts and the team working on them in the coming weeks. Despite the competition, the integration of AI on WhatsApp reflects the broader trend of AI becoming a ubiquitous part of everyday life, with Meta playing a crucial role in facilitating this transition. Meta’s investment in and strategic partnerships with AI-focused companies, such as Scale AI, further highlight its commitment to staying at the forefront of AI development.
