Google Photos Now Lets You Edit Photos by Simply Asking—Voice or Text—Powered by Gemini and C2PA Content Credentials

At Wednesday’s Made by Google event, the company unveiled new capabilities in Google Photos that let users edit their photos by simply asking for changes—either through voice or text. This feature, called “edit by asking,” will debut first on Pixel 10 devices in the U.S., leveraging Google’s Gemini AI to interpret natural language requests and apply edits automatically. Users can now describe desired changes in plain language, such as “remove the cars in the background” or “make this old photo look better,” and Google Photos will adjust the image accordingly. The tool can handle a range of tasks, from enhancing lighting and removing distractions to more creative edits like changing backgrounds or adding elements such as sunglasses or a party hat to the photo’s subject. Even if users aren’t sure what to ask for, they can simply say “make it better,” and the app will apply intelligent improvements. Google Photos will also offer suggestions for potential fixes and support follow-up requests, allowing for a more interactive and iterative editing experience. In addition to the new editing feature, Google is introducing support for C2PA Content Credentials in Google Photos. This standard helps track the origin and history of digital media, including whether AI was used in creating or modifying an image. Pixel 10 devices will be the first from Google to support C2PA natively, with the feature available across the Camera app and all photos taken with it—regardless of whether AI is involved. C2PA support will initially roll out on Pixel 10 devices, with broader availability across Google Photos on iOS and Android expected in the coming weeks. The “edit by asking” feature launches on Wednesday, marking a major step forward in making photo editing more accessible and intuitive for users of all skill levels.
