Google Photos introduces AI-powered video creation and photo remixing features for free
Google Photos is introducing new AI-powered tools that allow users to transform their static images into dynamic videos and remix them into different artistic styles. The features aim to help users bring their memories to life in creative ways, and they are available for free. One of the new tools enables users to take any photo from their gallery and turn it into a short six-second video. Options include adding "subtle movements" or using the "I'm feeling lucky" button to let the AI automatically animate the image. This functionality is part of a broader push by Google to enhance user engagement with its photo app through AI-driven creativity. Unlike the photo-to-video feature in the Gemini app, which uses the newer Veo 3 model and allows custom prompts, the Google Photos version relies on the older Veo 2 model and does not offer the same level of user input. The feature is now available on both Android and iOS devices. Another new addition is the "Remix" tool, which lets users edit photos into various artistic styles, such as anime, comic, 3D animation, or sketch. This allows for quick and easy transformations that can be shared on social media with just a few taps. Google has labeled both features as experimental, acknowledging that the results may not always meet user expectations. The company encourages users to provide feedback using thumbs up or thumbs down ratings to help refine the tools. In line with its commitment to responsible AI use, Google has implemented safeguards to prevent misuse. Remixed photos will include an invisible SynthID watermark, similar to the one used for images edited with Reimagine. Videos created through the new feature will also carry a visual watermark to indicate they were generated using AI. These updates reflect the growing trend of AI tools that enhance and transform user-generated content, offering new ways to interact with and share personal memories.
