Philips Report Reveals Major Trust Divide in Healthcare AI Between Clinicians and Patients, Threatening Progress

Royal Philips' 2025 Future Health Index Report Reveals Significant Trust Gap in Healthcare AI Between Clinicians and Patients CAMBRIDGE, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Royal Philips, a global leader in health technology, has released its 2025 Future Health Index (FHI) U.S. report, titled “Building Trust in Healthcare AI.” The report highlights a critical trust gap between healthcare professionals (HCPs) and patients regarding the role of artificial intelligence in healthcare. Despite AI’s potential to address many of the industry’s most pressing issues, this lack of trust poses a significant barrier to its adoption and efficacy. The findings indicate that nearly one-quarter of HCPs would not choose a career in healthcare if given the chance to start over, reflecting high levels of stress, frustration, and burnout within the profession. Patients, too, are experiencing strain, with average wait times to see a specialist reaching almost two months—a delay that often increases anxiety and may result in poorer health outcomes. While 63% of HCPs are optimistic about AI’s ability to improve patient outcomes, only 44% of patients share this sentiment. The discrepancy is even more pronounced among patients aged 45 and older, where just 33% express positivity toward AI’s role in enhancing healthcare. However, the report also underscores HCPs’ growing recognition of AI’s transformative potential. Approximately 62% of HCPs believe AI can enhance the patient experience by reducing procedure times and wait times. Moreover, 85% of HCPs agree that AI can alleviate their administrative workload, while 74% see it improving patient access and increasing face-to-face interaction with patients. These insights emphasize the substantial benefits AI can offer in streamlining healthcare delivery and enhancing provider satisfaction. “AI has the power to revolutionize healthcare, but its success hinges on trust, transparency, and collaboration between clinicians and patients,” said Jeff DiLullo, Chief Region Leader, Philips North America. “By working together, we can leverage AI to combat provider burnout and enhance patient care.” The Future Health Index is a landmark study commissioned by Philips, involving the largest global survey of its kind. It analyzed the perspectives of over 1,900 HCPs and more than 16,000 patients across 16 countries. This 10th edition of the report explores how innovative technologies, particularly AI, can empower healthcare professionals to deliver superior care to more people.
