Philips Report Reveals Major Trust Divide in Healthcare AI Between Clinicians and Patients

Philips has released its 2025 Future Health Index U.S. report, "Building Trust in Healthcare AI," which highlights a significant trust gap between healthcare professionals (HCPs) and patients regarding the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare. The report, unveiled in Cambridge, Massachusetts, aims to shed light on the current state of the healthcare system and identify areas where AI can make a difference. Despite the potential benefits, trust issues are emerging as a major barrier to progress. According to the report, many HCPs are experiencing high levels of stress, frustration, and burnout, to the point where nearly a quarter would not choose a healthcare career again if given the chance. Meanwhile, patients are grappling with long wait times, often stretching to almost two months to see a specialist. These extended waits can lead to increased anxiety and potentially poorer health outcomes. While 63% of HCPs are optimistic about AI's potential to improve patient outcomes, only 45% of patients share this sentiment. The disparity is more pronounced among older patients, with just 33% of those aged 45 and over expressing positive views about AI's role in healthcare. This trust gap underscores the need for better communication and education about the benefits and limitations of AI. However, the report also indicates growing recognition among HCPs of AI's transformative capabilities. Nearly two-thirds (62%) value AI's ability to enhance the patient experience by reducing procedure times and decreasing wait times. Additionally, 85% believe AI can alleviate their administrative burdens, and 74% think it can improve patient access to care by increasing capacity and throughput, as well as allowing for more face-to-face interactions with patients. These findings highlight the critical role AI can play in streamlining healthcare delivery and reducing systemic pressures. Jeff DiLullo, Chief Region Leader of Philips North America, emphasized the importance of trust, transparency, and collaboration. "AI is reshaping healthcare, but its success hinges on building trust and fostering open communication between clinicians and patients," DiLullo stated. "By working together, we can leverage AI to reduce provider burnout and enhance patient care." The Future Health Index is one of the world's largest and most comprehensive surveys of healthcare trends. For the 2025 U.S. report, Philips surveyed over 1,900 healthcare professionals and more than 16,000 patients across 16 countries.
