ChatGPT Now Integrates Spotify: Create Playlists, Get Recommendations, and Control Playback Using Your Account

OpenAI has introduced a new feature that allows users to connect their Spotify accounts directly to ChatGPT, enabling the AI assistant to deliver personalized music and podcast recommendations based on individual listening habits. This integration is part of a broader initiative allowing developers to build apps within ChatGPT, expanding the assistant’s ability to perform real-time tasks across third-party platforms. When you mention Spotify in a ChatGPT prompt—such as asking for a playlist for a road trip or recommendations based on mood—a button labeled “Use Spotify for this answer” appears at the bottom of the screen. Clicking it prompts you to link your Spotify account. Once connected, ChatGPT gains access to your likes, listening history, saved playlists, and followed artists, allowing it to generate highly tailored suggestions. Users can provide detailed instructions. For example, you can ask for a playlist of songs with “Dog” in the title, or one featuring only your most frequently played artists and top genres. The AI also asks for preferred playlist length, making it ideal for planning events or commutes. During testing, a request for a dog walking playlist with songs containing “Dog” in the title produced a relevant and engaging list, complete with track titles and artist names. Tapping any track opens the Spotify app directly, enabling seamless playback. Beyond recommendations, ChatGPT can now perform actions within your Spotify account. This includes controlling playback, adding or removing songs from your library, creating or editing private playlists, following new artists, and managing your following list—all through natural language commands. However, users should be aware of the privacy implications. Connecting your account means granting ChatGPT access to sensitive data, including your listening activity, saved content, and social connections on Spotify. It also shares your IP address and approximate location. OpenAI’s privacy policy warns that in the event of a security breach, there is a risk of unauthorized access to your data. Users can disconnect their Spotify account at any time through their settings. Spotify has also clarified that it does not share content from artists or creators with OpenAI for training AI models. All music, podcasts, and other media remain protected under Spotify’s existing content policies. The integration is available in English across 145 countries and supports all ChatGPT users—Free, Plus, and Pro—on both web and mobile platforms. While both free and premium Spotify users can access the feature, premium subscribers receive a more refined experience with enhanced personalization. This move follows similar integrations with other platforms, including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, and Zillow. These allow users to book stays, design graphics, enroll in courses, search for homes, and more—all directly within ChatGPT, streamlining workflows and improving user convenience.
