Figma Enhances AI Integration with New Dev Mode Model Context Protocol Server

Figma is introducing a new tool that enhances AI’s ability to translate designs into fully functional applications. The product design company is offering this tool to large language models (LLMs) and coding assistants like Copilot in VS Code and Claude Code through its new Dev Mode Model Context Protocol (MCP) server, which is currently in beta for users with Dev or Full seat access. The MCP server acts as a bridge between Figma and AI models, providing direct access to detailed design data. Instead of relying on visual interpretations of design images, AI tools can now access precise measurements, color codes, and other specific design elements directly from Figma. This is akin to an artist needing both the visual image and the techniques used to replicate a painting accurately. By offering this level of detail, Figma aims to streamline the process of converting designs into code, ensuring that the final application matches the designer's vision more closely. According to Figma, they plan to roll out several updates to the Dev Mode MCP Server over the next few months. These updates will include remote server capabilities and deeper integrations with existing codebases. The beta release coincides with the full availability of the Figma Make platform, which was initially launched in May. Figma Make allows users to describe their desired applications, and the platform generates the working code. As of Tuesday, this feature is now accessible to all Full seat Figma users. Additionally, Figma is set to introduce the Sites Code Layers feature on June 12th. This new tool will enable designers to transform their Figma creations into interactive website experiences with the assistance of AI. These enhancements are part of Figma’s broader strategy to integrate AI seamlessly into the design and development workflow, making the process more efficient and accurate. For tech enthusiasts and professionals, these developments promise to revolutionize how designers and developers collaborate to bring digital products to life.
