From Translation to Tutoring: Google Adds Gemini-Powered Features to Translate App

Google has enhanced its Translate app with two new AI-powered features powered by its Gemini models, designed to make language learning and real-time conversations more accessible and natural. Every month, users translate around 1 trillion words across Google Translate, Search, Lens, and Circle to Search, and now AI is making it even easier to overcome language barriers. The first major update is a real-time, back-and-forth conversation feature available on Android and iOS. This allows users to engage in live, spoken dialogues with people who speak different languages. By tapping “Live translate” in the app, users can select their preferred languages and begin speaking. The app uses advanced AI to transcribe speech, translate it in real time, and deliver the translation both audibly and on-screen. It intelligently detects conversational pauses, accents, and intonations, switching between languages seamlessly. The feature supports over 70 languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tamil. Currently available in the US, India, and Mexico, it enables natural, fluid interactions with just a single tap—ideal for travelers, business meetings, or casual chats. The second feature is a personalized language learning tool now in beta. Designed to help users build practical language skills, it creates customized lessons based on individual goals and proficiency levels. Initially available for English speakers learning Spanish or French, and for Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers learning English, the tool uses Gemini AI to generate tailored lessons. When users tap the “Practice” button, they can select their skill level and purpose—such as traveling, professional communication, or connecting with family. The app then crafts relevant scenarios; for example, an intermediate Spanish learner planning to study abroad might receive a lesson on discussing meal times with a host family. Users can then practice by speaking aloud or listening to sample conversations and identifying words they recognize. The exercises track daily progress, helping users build confidence and real-world communication skills. The approach resembles platforms like Duolingo, but with deeper personalization through AI. Google’s product manager Matt Sheets emphasized that these tools aim to help users communicate with confidence. While the live translation feature currently generates AI voices that don’t mimic the user’s voice, Google is experimenting with options to make the audio more natural and personalized. These updates reflect Google’s broader push to integrate advanced AI into everyday tools, making language learning and cross-cultural communication more intuitive. By leveraging the reasoning and multimodal capabilities of Gemini, Translate is evolving from a simple translation tool into a dynamic assistant for global connection.
