Next-Gen Cyber Guardians: Yubico Empowers Youth-Led Hackathons for Future Security

In a world where cybersecurity threats are becoming increasingly sophisticated and frequent, hardware security key provider Yubico is stepping up to support the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. Through its "Secure It Forward" initiative, Yubico has donated thousands of YubiKeys to more than 20 youth-led hackathons and technology events across the globe over the past ten months. This initiative aims to foster practical experience, encourage innovation, and enhance global internet security. Yubico, founded in 2007, has headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden, and Santa Clara, California, USA. It is a pioneer in developing anti-phishing multi-factor authentication (MFA) solutions and has contributed to creating open authentication standards like FIDO2, WebAuthn, and FIDO Universal 2nd Factor (U2F). These technologies significantly increase account security and ease of use, serving clients in over 160 countries. The "Secure It Forward" program officially launched in 2021 with the mission of providing hardware security keys to individuals and organizations most vulnerable to cyber threats. To date, Yubico has donated over 65,000 YubiKeys to non-profit organizations, political campaigns, journalists, and humanitarian workers in 20 countries. Beneficiaries include prominent entities such as Civil Rights Defenders, Anti-Defamation League, Freedom of the Press, and Defending Digital Campaigns. Yubico strongly believes that investing in young leaders and supporting their hackathon activities is crucial in the current threat landscape. These events allow students and young cybersecurity enthusiasts to face real-world security challenges, develop effective solutions, and hone their skills. Ronnie Manning, Yubico’s brand promotion director, emphasizes the importance of nurturing future leaders: “With global cybersecurity threats on the rise, equipping the next generation with the necessary tools and support is more critical than ever. Our mission is to make the internet safer, and this includes driving innovation, advancing open standards, and fostering practical experiences for young talent.”
