Google Announces $25 Billion Investment to Boost Energy Capacity and AI Innovation in Pennsylvania and Beyond
Ruth Porat, President and Chief Investment Officer of Alphabet and Google, joined President Trump, Senator Dave McCormick, and other government and business leaders at the Pennsylvania Energy & Innovation Summit in Pittsburgh. During the summit, Porat outlined Google’s plans to expand energy capacity, innovation, and job opportunities in the AI-driven economy. Here are the key highlights from her speech: On behalf of Google, Porat announced a significant investment of more than $25 billion over the next two years across states in the critical PJM region. To support this initiative, the company is focusing on three main areas of energy expansion and innovation: Fusion Energy and Hydropower Modernization: In line with the Trump Administration’s goal for energy abundance, Google has entered into a historic agreement with Commonwealth Fusion Systems for the largest-ever direct corporate purchase of fusion energy. This deal aims to accelerate the development and deployment of advanced nuclear technology. Additionally, Google is committing to a $3 billion, 20-year agreement with Brookfield Energy to modernize two hydropower facilities in Lancaster County. Grid Capacity Utilization: The Department of Energy estimates that there is up to 100 GW of untapped capacity in America’s existing grid infrastructure. Recognizing the importance of accessing this capacity to keep electricity costs low and to enable the rapid deployment of AI, Google is using advanced technology to optimize power usage. The company is also exploring how AI can help identify and efficiently deploy this latent capacity. Workforce Training: The United States faces a significant shortage of electrical workers, with McKinsey estimating a need for an additional 130,000 workers by 2030. More retirements are occurring each year than new entrants into the field. Last month, Google provided a grant to the electrical training ALLIANCE (etA) to equip more than 100,000 electrical workers with AI-powered learning tools and to train 30,000 new apprentices by 2030. Today, that grant is being expanded to boost the projected pipeline of new electricians in Pennsylvania by 64%. Porat emphasized the need to ensure that everyone benefits from the AI revolution. Starting in Pennsylvania, Google is launching AI Works for America, a program designed to train American workers and students in essential AI skills. This initiative includes partnerships with leading employers, universities, skilled trades, and manufacturers. As part of the commitment, Google will offer free AI training to all small businesses in Pennsylvania. Google has had a long-standing presence in Pittsburgh since 2006, beginning with a small office on the Carnegie Mellon University campus. Porat expressed gratitude for the invitation to speak at the summit and acknowledged the importance of the event in shaping the future of AI and energy in America. Senator McCormick received thanks for organizing the summit, and President Trump was commended for his leadership and vision in directing national investments in AI infrastructure, technology, and energy to maximize the benefits of these advancements for the country. Thank you.
