Figma Launches AI-Powered Tools to Challenge Adobe, WordPress, and Canva in All-In-One Design Platform Race

Figma is making a significant push to expand its creative software ecosystem, enabling product designers to complete entire projects without needing to switch to third-party applications. At the company’s annual Config conference today, Figma introduced four new products aimed at addressing gaps that have historically held the platform back from becoming an all-in-one solution for the entire product design lifecycle. These new offerings include Figma Sites, a website builder that integrates seamlessly with Figma Design, allowing creators to turn their prototypes into live, functional websites. Figma Sites offers preset layouts, blocks, and templates to streamline the website-building process, along with the ability to add custom animations. Users can either write their own code or use Figma Sites’ AI tool to auto-generate interaction codes based on text descriptions. For instance, a designer can input “animate the text to fall into place like a feather” to create a specific animation effect. Figma Sites is currently in beta for users with full access to Figma products, with AI code generation set to roll out in the coming weeks and a content management system (CMS) launching later this year. Figma Make is another key addition, designed to compete with AI coding tools like Google’s Gemini Code Assist and Microsoft’s GitHub Copilot. Figma Make, powered by Anthropic’s Claude 3.7 model, allows users to build functional prototypes and apps from text descriptions or existing designs. For example, it can generate a working music player that shows a spinning disc when a new track is played. Designers can also fine-tune elements like text formatting and font styles using AI-driven prompts. This feature is also in beta and available to full Figma users, with potential future integrations with third-party design systems and other Figma apps. Figma Buzz, a marketing-oriented design tool, aims to simplify the creation and publication of brand content. It is rolling out in beta to all Figma users and provides the ability to create brand-approved templates, styles, and assets for emails, social media posts, and advertisements. Figma Buzz includes generative AI capabilities for making and editing images using text prompts, and it can automatically generate thousands of image assets from spreadsheet data. The final new product, Figma Draw, is a vector design app that rivals Adobe Illustrator’s functionality but in a more streamlined form. Available now for full seat users, Figma Draw supports the creation of custom visuals, logos, and scalable images with various brushes, texture effects, and vector editing tools. It integrates with other Figma products like Sites, Slides, and Buzz, enhancing the platform's versatility. While Figma’s suite of tools does not yet match the breadth of Adobe’s Creative Cloud ecosystem, the introduction of Figma Draw marks a significant step. This move puts Figma in direct competition with Adobe, particularly since Adobe discontinued its XD product design platform. It also introduces new options to the creative software market, following the collapse of Adobe’s proposed $20 billion acquisition of Figma due to regulatory pressure. These updates highlight Figma’s commitment to innovation and its ambition to become a comprehensive design solution, capable of taking on major players like Adobe, WordPress, and Canva.
