Meta has announced the acquisition of Play AI, a startup known for its ability to generate human-sounding voices using artificial intelligence. According to Bloomberg, a Meta spokesperson has confirmed the acquisition, adding that an internal memo indicates the entire Play AI team will join Meta next week. TechCrunch has also sought confirmation from Meta. Meta's memo highlighted that Play AI's expertise in creating natural-sounding voices and its user-friendly voice creation platform align well with Meta’s ongoing projects and future plans, particularly in areas like AI characters, Meta AI, wearable devices, and audio content creation. This acquisition is part of Meta’s broader strategy to bolster its AI capabilities. The company has been actively investing in AI, including aggressive recruitment from leading AI labs such as OpenAI and a significant deal with Scale AI. In the latter transaction, Scale AI’s co-founder and CEO, Alexandr Wang, joined Meta to lead a new group focused on superintelligent systems. While the financial details of the Play AI acquisition have not been disclosed, Bloomberg had earlier reported that the two companies were engaged in acquisition talks. This move underscores Meta’s commitment to advancing its AI technologies and staying competitive in a rapidly evolving field.
