Google Launches SynthID Detector: A Unified Portal to Identify AI-Generated Content Across Multiple Media Formats
Advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI) are enabling people to create content in unprecedented ways—ranging from text and high-quality audio to images and videos. As these technologies advance and become more widely accessible, issues of authenticity, context, and verification are becoming increasingly important. Today, we are pleased to announce SynthID Detector, a comprehensive verification portal designed to quickly and accurately identify AI-generated content produced using Google's AI models. This portal consolidates detection capabilities across multiple content types in one user-friendly interface, offering essential transparency in the rapidly evolving landscape of generative media. The introduction of SynthID, a cutting-edge tool that embeds imperceptible watermarks into AI-generated content, marked a significant step in addressing concerns about misinformation and misattribution. SynthID not only maintains the highest standards of content quality but also ensures that these watermarks remain detectable even when the content is shared or altered. Initially developed to watermark AI-generated images, we have now extended its capabilities to include text, audio, and video content, covering outputs from our Gemini, Imagen, Lyria, and Veo models. Over 10 billion pieces of content have already been secured with SynthID watermarks. How SynthID Detector Works When you upload media, such as an image, audio clip, video, or text, that has been created using Google's AI tools, the SynthID Detector portal performs a thorough scan to detect any watermarks. If a SynthID watermark is identified, the portal highlights the specific areas or segments of the content most likely to contain it. For images, the detector pinpoints regions where the watermark is most prevalent, ensuring that users can quickly identify AI-generated elements. Similarly, for audio tracks, it identifies particular segments that carry the watermark, allowing for precise verification. The portal also supports text and video content, providing detailed insights into which parts are likely to have been watermarked. This initiative underscores Google's commitment to fostering trust and transparency in the digital realm. By offering a reliable method to verify content origin, SynthID Detector aims to mitigate the risks associated with misleading or falsified information, thereby enabling users and creators to navigate the digital landscape more confidently.
