Ukrainian Robotic Turrets Score First Kills on Russia's Fastest Drones

Ukraine has successfully deployed artificial intelligence-enabled robotic gun turrets to intercept and destroy Russia’s fastest jet-powered attack drones, marking a significant advancement in the nation’s air defense capabilities. According to Ukrainian Air Force spokesperson Yurii Inhat, the automated systems utilize machine vision and AI targeting to engage high-speed threats, including the newly deployed Geran-5 drone, which travels at speeds up to 375 miles per hour. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that more than a dozen of these turrets, equipped with .50-caliber machine guns, have been strategically positioned around Kyiv, with eight additional units planned for broader regional deployment. Several installations are located on critical infrastructure, including bridges recently targeted by Russian aerial assaults. The deployment addresses a rapidly evolving threat landscape. Russia has markedly increased its use of mini turbojet-powered drones, launching 2,800 in August alone compared to 350 in June. While the AI turrets currently achieve an interception rate of 50 to 70 percent against these jet-powered models, they remain less effective than against older propeller-driven variants like the Geran-2, which see over 85 percent interception success. Ukrainian defense firms are concurrently accelerating development of next-generation interceptor drones to close the performance gap. Zelenskyy noted that the domestic Bars long-range drone currently leads interceptor platforms with a 30 percent success rate against advanced Russian threats, while other emerging models rapidly improve their tracking and engagement capabilities. Previously, Kyiv confirmed the operational use of the Sky Sentinel AI turret, demonstrating a sustained push toward automated defense technologies. The current turret models feature a defined operational range and prioritize high-value asset protection. As Russian aerial attacks continue to escalate, Ukraine's integration of AI-driven gun systems and upgraded drone interceptors represents a critical adaptation in maintaining airspace security against increasingly sophisticated jet-powered munitions.
