The rivalry between OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has deep roots, stretching back to their shared origins in the early days of AI research. In July 2015, Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and a group of leading AI researchers gathered at the Rosewood Hotel in Menlo Park, California, to discuss creating a nonprofit AI lab that could counterbalance the growing power of corporate giants like Google. Musk invited Dario Amodei to join the effort, though Amodei initially declined.
