FAA Launches $875M AI System to Streamline Air Traffic Control
The Federal Aviation Administration is deploying an artificial intelligence-driven software platform to address a persistent national shortage of air traffic controllers and modernize aging infrastructure. The program, named Strategic Management of Airspace, Routes, and Trajectories, or SMART, represents a $875 million, twelve-year investment in cloud-based automation developed by Air Space Intelligence. According to recent reports, the system will initially deploy within the Washington, D.C., metropolitan airspace before expanding to other regions across the United States. SMART operates as a centralized cloud platform designed to integrate with existing FAA management systems. By analyzing airline schedules, meteorological data, airport capacity limits, airspace constraints, and real-time operational variables, the software employs machine learning algorithms to forecast traffic density and flag potential route conflicts before they escalate. This predictive capability aims to reduce controller workload, enhance routing efficiency, and improve overall flight safety during periods of peak demand or adverse weather conditions. The initiative aligns with the agency broader modernization agenda and a recently announced recruitment drive aimed at eliminating decades-long staffing deficits. By automating complex trajectory planning and resource allocation, the FAA intends to bridge the gap between rising air travel volumes and constrained human resources.
