Jensen Huang's CMU Commencement Speech: AI Is Creating a New Industrial Era
On May 10, at Carnegie Mellon University's (CMU) 128th commencement ceremony, NVIDIA founder and CEO Jensen Huang delivered the keynote address. He stated, "You stand at an extraordinary moment—a new industry is being born, and a fresh era of science and exploration is dawning." Huang connected the AI revolution to his personal journey, recalling that he began during the PC revolution, while now marks the dawn of the AI revolution. "Every major shift in computing platforms—personal computers, the internet, mobile, and cloud computing—has converged here," he said. "But what comes next will be even greater than before. Because intelligence underpins every sector, each one will be transformed." He argued that AI is driving the largest infrastructure build-out in human history, offering the United States a historic opportunity for "re-industrialization." By making computational power and intelligence universally accessible, AI can truly bridge the technological divide, benefiting everyone—from electricians and plumbers to engineers and builders across diverse industries. Addressing uncertainties arising from technological change, Huang emphasized, "Each great technological revolution brings both fear and opportunity together. Scientists and engineers bear dual responsibilities—to advance AI capabilities alongside safety. Policymakers must establish thoughtful boundaries that protect society while enabling innovation to move forward." Citing radiologists as an example, he noted that AI automates "tasks" but elevates "purpose"—radiologists do more than read images; they care for patients. In recognition of CMU's contributions to the field of AI, Huang was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Science degree during the ceremony. As early as the 1950s, CMU created the first AI program named "Logic Theorist," and established the world's first robotics school in 1979. Concluding his speech, Huang quoted CMU's motto—"My heart is in the work"—and urged graduates: "Put your passion into your work, creating things worthy of pride by those who educated you, believed in your potential, and trusted in you."
