RemoveMacAI Disables Apple Intelligence and Frees Disk Space on macOS 27

A new open-source utility named RemoveMacAI enables Apple Silicon Mac users running macOS 27 to fully disable Apple Intelligence and reclaim storage space previously consumed by on-device machine learning models. Unlike macOS 27, which lacks a centralized switch to toggle the AI suite and continues to retain downloaded models even after features are deactivated, the script provides a direct, reversible command to manage both the functionality and associated files. The tool operates without requiring a permanent installation or collecting user data. Upon execution, it verifies its cryptographic signature, runs from a temporary directory, and prompts the user to approve a configuration profile through System Settings. This profile effectively blocks macOS from automatically re-downloading AI assets in future sessions. Users can manage the tool through straightforward terminal commands to check the current status, selectively preserve specific features, simulate changes, or completely revert all modifications. Disabling Apple Intelligence via RemoveMacAI systematically deactivates a broad range of integrated capabilities. These include Hey Siri, menu bar shortcuts, Writing Tools, Genmoji, Image Playground, the ChatGPT extension, and AI-driven summaries and smart replies across Mail, Messages, Safari, Notes, and notifications. The utility also disables inline text predictions, spatial photo rendering, photo cleanup automation, and predictive code completion within Xcode. Correspondingly, the script removes the underlying Apple Intelligence foundation models, alongside specialized models responsible for image generation, spatial processing, and code assistance. The developers note that voice dictation remains fully operational, as it relies on a separate speech recognition stack whose models are intentionally preserved. Furthermore, the configuration profile and model deletion persist across subsequent macOS updates, ensuring long-term storage savings. While the Spotlight window and certain protected system services may still appear under Siri-related processes due to System Integrity Protection, core dictation functionality remains unaffected. RemoveMacAI requires Apple Silicon hardware and macOS 27, with version 0.2.3 or higher recommended for macOS 27.0.1 compatibility. The project, released under the MIT license, builds upon foundational work by developer 4evy to map the asset service and model configurations. It offers a lightweight, auditable solution for users seeking to minimize the disk footprint and functional scope of Apple's on-device artificial intelligence suite without compromising system stability.
